Endecott yDNA Project Goals

  1. Identify the father of Governor John Endecott (15881665)
    • Is it Thomas Endecott (15661621) of Chagford, England?
    • Maybe one of Thomas Endecotts (b. 1566) siblings?
    • Maybe a distant relative of Thomas Endecott (b. 1566)?
    • Could it be a man with an unknown surname?
    • Could Gov. John Endecott be a descendant of the Yorkshire Endeacotts (ae spelling)?
    • Some have claimed Gov. Johns parents were from Dorchester, Englandanother possibility?
  2. Identify the family lines of various Endecott families from around the world
    • Variant spellings: Endecott, Endicott, Endacott, Indicott, Endeacott,
    • Large groups in the USA, England, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand,
  1. Rule out whether certain families only took on the Endecott surname when surnames were required
  2. Compare all Endecott family lines and determine where they fit into the haplogroup tree
  3. Determine places of origin associated with submitted DNA samples
  4. Determine the specific branch the tester belongs to
  5. Determine if other surnames are associated with the Endecott surname
  6. Determine if the tester is genetically related to others who share the Endecott (and variations) surname
New to yDNA? Only males can take a Y-DNA test; it traces the direct paternal line and places you in a haplogroup. Big Y-700 gives the best resolution for this project.

Havent tested?

Males need to test their yDNA at Family Tree DNA to participate. Take the highest yDNA marker test you can afford the Big Y-700 gives the best results.

If you cant afford a higher test, start with a lower one. You may be asked later to add a SNP test.

Who we need to test

  1. Male descendants of Gov. John Endecott
  2. Male siblings and descendants of Thomas Endacott (b. 1566 in Chagford married to Unknown)
  3. Male siblings and descendants of John Endecott (b. 1541, married Johanna Unknown)
  4. Male siblings and descendants of Henry Endecott (b. 1515, married Marjory Halse)
  5. Male Endecott spelling variations (Endicott, Endacott, Indicott, Endeacott, and many others)
  6. Males who believe theyre Endacott descendants with a different surname (due to adoption, divorce, non-parental event, etc.)

Financial assistance may be available case-by-case:

  1. Thomas Endecotts (b. 1566 Chagford) siblings and their male descendants:
    • William Endecott (b. 1560) married Anne Ellis
    • Robert Endecott (b. 24 Dec 1570)
    • Richard Endecott (b. 1561)
  2. yDNA matches in the FTDNA database who dont meet the above criteria but may be related to Endecotts. These individuals often need additional SNP testing.

Male descendants are crucial in determining the ancestors of Gov. John Endecott. yDNA is passed from father to son with small mutations that accumulate over generations, enabling us to place each male in the correct haplogroup and subgroup.
